HARDWARE 101

Are the Smallest Details Holding Your Space Together—or Holding It Back?

From the twist of a doorknob to the pull of a drawer, hardware is everywhere—and when it’s off, you feel it. These tiny touches influence how your space looks, feels, and functions. So… is your hardware doing its job or just getting by?

What’s the Role of Hardware in Your Home?

Whether it’s purely functional or purely fabulous (ideally both), quality hardware:

  • Improves usability of doors, cabinets, and drawers
  • Enhances security at entry points
  • Ties together design themes across rooms
  • Supports specialized needs, from accessibility to smart tech

SIGNS YOU NEED A PRO

  • You’re juggling mismatched finishes or styles room-to-room
  • You’ve got loose, squeaky, or misaligned doors and drawers
  • You’re unsure which locks, handles, or hinges fit the use-case
  • You have security concerns at doors or access points

WHAT A PRO CAN OFFER THAT DIY OFTEN MISSES

  • Guidance on durable, high-performance options within your budget
  • Clean, correct installation that extends the hardware’s lifespan and feel
  • A cohesive, coordinated look across your whole home or project
  • Specialty solutions for accessibility, childproofing, or smart integration
  • Product selection that avoids returns, rework, or regret

Hardware isn’t just finishing—it’s function, finesse, and first impressions. Choose it like it matters—because it does.

ASK AN EXPERT

These are just a few of the questions commonly asked by our clients about Hardware.
1
What materials are available?

Hardware finishes come in a wide range in variety of materials and coatings, each with its own blend of style, durability, and maintenance needs. Whether you’re choosing a door handle, cabinet pulls, or a towel bar for your bathroom, there are many options available to help you design a look that feels custom and timeless.

2
Should all hardware finishes match throughout the house?

They do not need too. You can mix up finishes for visual interest, especially in different rooms. Keeping undertones (warm vs. cool) consistent and choosing one predominant finish is a good general guideline.

3
Should I use knobs or pulls on cabinets?

Choosing between knobs and pulls on your cabinets can elevate both the look and functionality of your cabinets. Generally, pulls work better on drawers and lower cabinets for ergonomic ease and knobs are used for upper cabinets and offer a more traditional look. There are many combinations of hardware finishes to finish your project off right.

4
What hardware finish is best for durability and low maintenance?

Satin and Brushed finishes hide fingerprints and scratches much better then polished ones. A satin or brushed finish may only need a wiping or cleaning every so often, where a chrome or brass finish may need more regular cleaning.

5
Do i need soft close mechanisms?

Soft close mechanisms are not necessary, but after having them you make think so. Drawers and doors close gently reducing noise and wear. They are great for homes with kids, no more pinched fingers or sudden bangs. Soft close mechanisms add a touch of luxury and practical functionality to your space. Soft close features are seen as a sign of quality and in most modern cabinetry are included in the design.

5
What hardware finish works best with my color scheme?

Generally, warm tones (beige, brown, red) go well with antique brass or oil-rubbed bronze and cool tones (grey, blue, white) pair well with chrome, satin nickel, or matte black. Hardware finish decisions are not set in stone, they are very much up to your design style and imagination.
