What’s in your wall?

INSULATION 101

Is Your Home Losing Energy—or Holding Its Own?

Insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to improve comfort, cut utility bills, and reduce wear on your HVAC system. But most homes—old and new—are under-insulated or poorly sealed. So, is your insulation doing its job… or letting comfort slip away?

Where to insulate in a home:

  • Attic (remember, heat rises!)
  • Interior and exterior walls (for temperature and noise)
  • Floors over unheated areas (such as basements, crawl spaces)
  • Basement/crawlspace walls (to help with moisture and temp control)
  • Ducts and pipes (to reduce heat loss from hot water and HVAC)

SIGNS YOU NEED A PRO

  • High energy bills
  • Uneven temps between rooms
  • Cold floors, drafty walls
  • Visible moisture or mold issues
  • Ice dams in winter
  • HVAC running constantly
  • You’re planning a major renovation

WHAT A PRO CAN DO THAT YOU MIGHT MISS

  • Determine the right amount of insulation (more is not always better)
  • Ensure proper ventilation in attics and crawlspaces
  • Avoid fire hazards with recessed lights and electrical boxes
  • Seal air leaks before insulating, an often-overlooked area in DIY installs
